\nLawrence County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of J. Lawrence, a captain in the United States Navy from Vermont. As of 2000 the population was 34,803. Its county seat is Moulton.

\nLawrence County was established on February 6, 1818.

Geography

\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,860 km² (718 mi²). 1,796 km² (693 mi²) of it is land and 64 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.44% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 34,803 people, 13,538 households, and 10,194 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (50/mi²). There are 15,009 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.77% White, 13.36% Black or African American, 5.36% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 3.08% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 13,538 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.50% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.70% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.99. In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 30.10% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,549, and the median income for a family is $38,565. Males have a median income of $31,519 versus $20,480 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,515. 15.30% of the population and 13.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.80% are under the age of 18 and 24.50% are 65 or older.
