Leo Hendrik Baekeland (November 14, 1863 - February 23, 1944) was a Belgian chemist. He was born in Ghent and studied at the university of his native city. From 1889 onwards, he lived in the United States. In 1907 he invented bakelite, a polymeric plastic made from phenol and formaldehyde.
