Lindström is a city located in Chisago County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,015. Lindström's slogan is "America's Little Sweden".

History and Culture

Lindstrom is made up of predominantly Swedish immigrants and their families. Many people in Lindström still speak Sweedish but, by Minnesota law, all government business must be in English. Every year, Lindström has a farmer's market. Lindström also celebrates the Karl Oskar Days, named after a fictional character in The Emigrants by Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.16% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,015 people, 1,225 households, and 855 families residing in the city. The population density is 515.1/km² (1,332.1/mi²). There are 1,322 housing units at an average density of 225.9/km² (584.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.61% White, 0.20% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,225 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.4% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $44,980, and the median income for a family is $50,519. Males have a median income of $42,604 versus $28,163 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,195. 8.0% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.6% are under the age of 18 and 13.9% are 65 or older.
