\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,890 km² (730 mi²). 1,837 km² (709 mi²) of it is land and 52 km² (20 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.77% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,802 people, 9,067 households, and 6,047 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (31/mi²). There are 9,800 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.22% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,067 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.30% are non-families. 30.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.92.
