Maryborough is situated on the Mary River in South East Queensland, and is a city of approximately 26000 persons. Maryborough was proclaimed a city in 1905, and is located 300 kilometres north of the state capital, Brisbane.

Maryborough is the self styled Heritage City of Queensland, and holds heritage markets each Thursday. The city has preserved a large number of 19th and 20th century buildings.

The main industrial strength of the city is comprised of Walkers Limited, a heavy engineering business, which has built much of the rolling stock and locomotives for Queensland Railways.
