\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 690 km² (266 mi²). 673 km² (260 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.45% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,231 people, 7,970 households, and 5,857 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km² (82/mi²). There are 8,916 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 60.78% White, 37.52% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,970 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.70% are married couples living together, 19.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.08.
