McGehee is a city located in Desha County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,570.

History

\nMcGehee was founded as a rail-road town. The population of McGehee has been declining since the late 1960s. McGehee was the home town of horror novelist Nancy A. Collins.

There are 2,044 housing units at an average density of 122.9/km² (318.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 56.72% White, 41.51% Black or African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,836 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% are married couples living together, 22.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 29.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.99. In the city the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.1 males.
