\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,746 km² (1,060 mi²). 2,698 km² (1,042 mi²) of it is land and 48 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.73% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 213,517 people, 78,859 households, and 52,914 families residing in the county. The population density is 79/km² (205/mi²). There are 84,795 housing units at an average density of 31/km² (81/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.17% White, 15.19% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 1.07% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 9.21% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 17.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 78,859 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.70% are married couples living together, 13.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.15.
In the county, the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 14.60% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 19.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older.
