McPherson County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 29,554. Its county seat is McPherson, Kansas6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,334 km² (901 mi²). 2,330 km² (900 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 29,554 people, 11,205 households, and 7,966 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (33/mi²). There are 11,830 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.53% White, 0.81% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,205 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.50% are married couples living together, 6.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.90% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% who are 65 years of age or older.
