The Middle Passage was one leg of the slave trade - that is the one transporting people from Africa to North America, South America and the Caribbean. It was called the Middle Passage as the slave trade was a triangular system - the boats left Europe, went to Africa, then to America, and then returned to Europe. It is estimated that 15-20% did not survive the journey.
