Milton is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 26,062. It is the home of the prestigious secondary school Milton Academy and the birthplace of former President George H. W. Bush.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 34.4 km² (13.3 mi²). 33.8 km² (13.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.81% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 26,062 people, 8,982 households, and 6,754 families residing in the town. The population density is 771.7/km² (1,999.1/mi²). There are 9,161 housing units at an average density of 271.2 persons/km² (702.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.38% White, 10.23% African American, 0.07% Native American, 2.04% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. 1.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,982 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 24.8% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.2 males.
