A fine batsman and former captain of the Indian cricket team during the late 1980s and early 1990s. In his prime he had a graceful, fluid batting style, comparable to that of his English contemporary, David Gower. He shot to overnight fame in 1984 when he hit four consecutive centuries int his first three test matches, including the debut innings.

Whilst not as prolific as some of his teammates, his innings were always worth watching, if only for the nicely played shots. At the same time his immaculate fielding was a sight to behold.

Azharuddin was tainted by allegations of match-fixing and bribery; he was banned from the game for life.
