\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,742 km² (673 mi²). 1,721 km² (665 mi²) of it is land and 21 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.18% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 84,585 people, 32,518 households, and 22,860 families residing in the county. The population density is 49/km² (127/mi²). There are 35,163 housing units at an average density of 20/km² (53/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.91% White, 4.01% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 32,518 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.30% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.01. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,185, and the median income for a family is $41,938. Males have a median income of $31,537 versus $22,151 for females.
