The Nikon D70 is a consumer digital SLR camera. In December 2003, Nikon announced (as cited in Nikon USA, 2003) that they plan to mass-produce it and offer it to the public beginning in the spring of 2004. Before it was released (which, as of this writing, hadn't yet occured), they were expected to introduce it at the 2004 PMA Annual Convention and Trade Show, and that they would be intend for it to be a direct competitor to the Canon EOS Digital Rebel (Digital Photography Review, 2003).

According to Nikon USA (2003), the D70 would feature the Nikon DX-format sensor and Nikon F lens mount. Furthermore, it would possess features not found in any other Nikon products. According to Digital Photography Reivew (2003), it might be heavily based on the D100.

Retail prices are estimated to be 999 USD in the United States (Nikon USA, 2003), and 1,100 EUR in Europe (Digital Photography Review, 2003).
