\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,813 km² (700 mi²). 1,800 km² (695 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.75% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 12,548 people, 4,470 households, and 3,222 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (18/mi²). There are 5,228 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 29.49% White, 69.30% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,470 households out of which 35.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.00% are married couples living together, 24.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% are non-families. 25.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.36. In the county the population is spread out with 30.70% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 19.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 90.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $22,330, and the median income for a family is $27,312. Males have a median income of $25,008 versus $17,636 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,018. 32.80% of the population and 29.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 43.60% are under the age of 18 and 25.30% are 65 or older.
