\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,290 km² (884 mi²). 2,287 km² (883 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,200 people, 1,275 households, and 893 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (4/mi²). There are 1,444 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.69% White, 0.03% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.34% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. 2.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,275 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.90% are married couples living together, 4.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 27.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
