Plaid may refer to more than one thing:

  • In American English plaid is cloth is made with alternating stripes and bands of color woven into or dyed onto the fabric. This makes blocks of color that repeat vertically and horizontally in a pattern of squares and lines.
  • In some variants of British English, in particular, Scotland, plaid is a large length of cloth, usually tartan. It is basically a blanket. It may be laid on the ground as a tablecloth for a picnic. However it is also worn pleated and wrapped around the waist with the end cast over the shoulder in the ancient style of kilt. A belt is worn to support the mass of material gathered at the waist.
  • Plaid is also the name of a British electronic music duo.
