The Princess Alice was a passenger steamer. On the evening of September 3, 1878, it collided with the steam collier Bywell Castle and sank into the Thames in under four minutes. Of the approximately 700 passengers, over 600 were lost (sources vary on the actual numbers). Both ships noticed the other but steered in the same direction, in violation of the rules of right-of-way.

Princess Alice is also a minor member of the British Royal Family.
