Provincetown is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the town of Provincetown in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 3,192.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 13.6 km² (5.2 mi²). 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and 8.9 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 65.33% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 3,192 people, 1,726 households, and 429 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 680.9/km² (1,759.3/mi²). There are 3,712 housing units at an average density of 791.8 persons/km² (2,045.9 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 87.53% White, 7.49% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.13% from other races, and 3.04% from two or more races. 2.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,726 households out of which 8.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 17.7% are married couples living together, 5.0% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 75.1% are non-families. 54.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.67 and the average family size is 2.62.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 7.6% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 36.4% from 25 to 44, 32.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who are 65 years of age or older.
