\nPutnam County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 18,812. The name is in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. The county's county seat is Eatonton, Georgia6.

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 934 km² (361 mi²). 892 km² (345 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.46% water.

There are 10,319 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (30/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 67.45% White, 29.90% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 2.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,402 households out of which 28.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 12.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 22.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 28.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
