\nPutnam County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 18,812. The name is in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. The county's county seat is Eatonton, Georgia6.

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 934 km² (361 mi²). 892 km² (345 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.46% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 67.45% White, 29.90% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 2.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,402 households out of which 28.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 12.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 22.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.90. In the county the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 28.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $36,956, and the median income for a family is $43,262. Males have a median income of $30,900 versus $21,823 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,161. 14.60% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.80% are under the age of 18 and 9.80% are 65 or older.
