\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,557 km² (987 mi²). 2,546 km² (983 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,154 people, 6,779 households, and 4,623 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (18/mi²). There are 7,413 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.72% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.77% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 5.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,779 households out of which 31.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% are married couples living together, 5.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% are non-families. 28.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.05.
