\nThe parish has a total area of 1,462 km2 (565 mi2). 1,446 km2 (558 mi2) of it is land and 16 km2 (6 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.07% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 20,981 people, 7,490 households, and 5,482 families residing in the parish. The population density is 15/km2 (38/mi2). There are 8,335 housing units at an average density of 6/km2 (15/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 60.96% White, 38.01% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,490 households out of which 34.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.20% are married couples living together, 18.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.80% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.14. In the parish the population is spread out with 27.30% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 88.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.30 males. The median income for a household in the parish is $23,668, and the median income for a family is $29,075. Males have a median income of $28,471 versus $18,587 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $12,479. 27.90% of the population and 23.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 39.50% are under the age of 18 and 20.90% are 65 or older.
