The high school's main rival is Central High School. The high school runs a school newspaper called The Blue and Gold. Riverdale High School is also the high school for the small but wealthy Riverdale School District in the metropolitan area of Portland, Oregon. The school was established under controversial circumstances. The first controversy arose because the school was created in the early 1990s to avoid having the district's century-old grade school affected by new statewide laws promoting consolidation. In 2001, controversy continued, as the district asked voters to allow a permanent site be built for the school at a location outside of the district's boundaries.
