U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.1 km² (5.5 mi²). 14.1 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

census2 of 2000, there are 3,782 people, 1,444 households, and 1,054 families residing in the city. The population density is 267.4/km² (692.6/mi²). There are 1,573 housing units at an average density of 111.2/km² (288.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.26% White, 3.31% Black or African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 1.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,444 households out of which 36.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.06. In the city the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older.
