As of 2003, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore covers the City of Baltimore as well as Allegany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Howard, and Washington counties, Maryland.

The Prefecture Apostolic of the United States of America was established on November 26, 1784. The Prefecture was elevated to the Diocese of Baltimore on November 6, 1789, and elevated to Archdiocese on April 8, 1808. The Archbishop of Baltimore is called the "Honorary Primate" of the United States, as he occupies the oldest see in the nation.
