St. Charles Township is a township located in Saginaw County, Michigan.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 96.3 km² (37.2 mi²). 95.7 km² (37.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,393 people, 1,301 households, and 965 families residing in the township. The population density is 35.4/km² (91.8/mi²). There are 1,365 housing units at an average density of 14.3 persons/km² (36.9 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 96.73% White, 0.47% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 3.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,301 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 25.8% are non-families. 22.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the township the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.9 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $40,726, and the median income for a family is $48,776. Males have a median income of $40,208 versus $23,708 for females. The per capita income for the township is $17,818. 8.0% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.1% are under the age of 18 and 7.7% are 65 or older.
