Scituate is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the town of Scituate in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,069.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.11% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 5,069 people, 2,055 households, and 1,383 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 478.5/km² (1,238.4/mi²). There are 2,189 housing units at an average density of 206.6 persons/km² (534.8 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.76% White, 1.03% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.32% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,055 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 32.7% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.02.
