The Second Division is the third highest league division for English football league teams.

The Second Division is also known as Division Two. Other names are often applied such as Nationwide Second Division, which is reference to the sponsors of the Football League.

At the end of each season the top two teams are promoted to Division One, along with the winners of a play-off between the next four teams. Also, the bottom four teams are relegated to Division Three.

No team can win this division two years in a row, this is because they would enter the Division One competition for the following season.

However, there are proposals for clubs to be denied promotion for failing to meet certain criteria, clubs which go into financial administration may be forced to stay in Division Two, even after winning the division. Therefore, it may soon be possible for a team to retain the Division Two title.
