A selenoprotein is any protein that includes a selenocysteine residue. Selenoproteins exist in all major forms of life, eukaryote, eubacteria and archaea. There are some classes of organisms in which selenoproteins have not been found, such as yeasts, and it is possible that these organisms may lack selenoproteins.
