A server log is a text file maintained by a server of activity performed by the server. A typical example is a web server log which maintains a history of page requests. Information about the request (IP Address, date/time, page requested, HTTP code etc.) are stored and can be analyzed later to examine traffic patterns.

The W3C maintains a standard format for web server log files at http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-logfile , but other proprietary formats exist.
