The Shanghai Communiqué was an important diplomatic document issued by the United States of America and the People's Republic of China during the U.S. President Richard Nixon's visit to China on 28 February 1972. The document announced the normalization the relations between the two countries.

In terms of the Taiwan problem, the communiqué stated the Chinese view that Taiwan is a part of China and that the PRC is the sole legitimate government of China, with the USA acknowledging the former position and agreeing to cut back military installations on Taiwan, but ignoring the latter.
