Silbo Gomero is a whistling language heard on La Gomera, one of the Spanish-administered Canary Islands. Linguists believe the "language" is of Berber linguistic lineage. It is nearly extinct; however, an initiative by the regional government has made studying Silbo compulsory in state schools.
