Southampton is a town located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 54,712.

United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 765.6 km² (295.6 mi²). 359.7 km² (138.9 mi²) of it is land and 405.9 km² (156.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 53.02% water.

census of 2000, there are 54,712 people, 21,504 households, and 13,805 families residing in the town. The population density is 152.1/km² (394.0/mi²). There are 35,836 housing units at an average density of 99.6 persons/km² (258.0 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 87.98% White, 6.62% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 2.28% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. 8.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 21,504 households out of which 27.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 35.8% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.99. In the town the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older.
