Spencer is a place located in Worcester County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 6,032.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.74% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,032 people, 2,554 households, and 1,527 families residing in the community. The population density is 1,093.4/km² (2,835.2/mi²). There are 2,722 housing units at an average density of 493.4 persons/km² (1,279.4 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 97.58% White, 0.61% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,554 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.8% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 40.2% are non-families. 33.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the community the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older.
