Spinoza's Coat is a philosophy group located in Cole Valley, San Francisco. This group usually meets every Tuesday with the purpose of reading all the seminal texts in the Western Canon of philosophy. The group was started around 2000 by a group of like minded individuals interested in a more in-depth approach to philosophy. Most of the co-founders met at the Reverie Coffee Shop.

The group got its name from the story of an assassination attempt upon the philosopher, Spinoza. Apparently, Spinoza became a target because of his association with anti-monarchists in Holland. A man tried to stab Spinoza, but instead only ripped his coat. When he went home that day, Spinoza hung his coat indefinitely as a sign that humanity was not yet ready for free thought.
