Spooky Kid is a very recent term which isn't yet widespread in the Gothic community. It is generally used in a derogatory fashion. Spooky Kids are those who devotedly listen to and follow the influence of such mainstream dark bands as Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails. The name came from the original name of Manson's band, Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids. They can also be referred to (in a sometimes derogatory fashion) as Mansonites or ninnies. (Ninny comes from the initals of the band Nine Inch Nails)
Most Spooky Kids are under eighteen years old, and dress and act like their idols do - to shock. A good deal of what they do is done for no particular reason other than rebellion against the status quo. Many are simply trend followers, though others are genuinely interested in the goth subculture and see this as being a way to become goth. As a general rule, Spooky Kids do not label themselves as such, the term being derogatory. Most refer to themselves as goths, despite their resentment of true goths.
Much to the chagrin of true goths, Spooky Kids are often mistaken for goths. This tends to frustrate both sides because many goths consider Spooky Kids to be poseurs who give the goth culture a bad name with their pointlessly shocking antics. Spooky Kids, on the other hand, resent goths for being snobbish and elitist towards those who don't live, breathe, and eat goth.
