The Studenica Monastery is the largest and richest Serbian Orthodox monastery. Located in the south-east Serbia, it was founded in the 1190 CE by Stevan Nemanja, founder of the medieval Serb state. Its fortified walls encompass two churches (Church of the Virgin and the Church of the King), both built of white marble. The monastery is best known by its contains collection of 13th- and 14th-century Byzantine-style fresco painting.
