Snorkeling

Snorkeling refers to swimming at the surface with face submerged while breathing through a thin tube or snorkel, as well as to diving to shallow depths -say, up to 20 meters/60 feet- from a snorkeling position while holding one's breath.

Free Diving

Free diving refers to a range of styles whereby well-trained snorkelers and divers try to attain a maximum depth in a single dive using only the air in their lungs from a single breath. Depths of more than 100 meters/300 feet have been attained.

Scuba Diving

Scuba-diving refers to longer continuous dives -say, up to an hour- to fairly great depths -say, up to 50 meters/150 feet- using SCUBA or Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus equipment. In this case, tanks containing compressed *air*. Scuba divers are mostly recreational divers.

Tech Diving

Finally, technical divers also use scuba apparatus, but in this case the tanks are filled with gas mixtures other than air. NITROX (nitrogen & oxygen) and TRIMIX (nitrogen, oxygen and helium) are commonly used. Tech divers make really deep dives and use gas mixtures for safety or longer bottom-time.
