Sybill Trelawney is a fictional character who appears in J. K. Rowling's series of Harry Potter novels. Sybill is the teacher of Divination at Hogwarts.
Sybill P. Trelawney is professor of Divination at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She is great-great-grandaughter of the celebrated seer Cassandra Trelawney. Sybill talks in ethereal and misty tones, which seems to annoy Harry and his friend Ron Weasley, who consider Trelawney to be nothing more than an old fraud, which the teachers (particularly Professor Minerva McGonagall) are inclined to agree with. Trelawney unusually starts her classes by predicting the death of one of her students, and keeps this sharad up for the rest of the time she teaches that pupil. Trelawney dons many gauzy bangles, cloaks and shawls, all covered with shining sequins, which in Harry's opinion make her look like an oversized drangonfly. She also dons thick glasses, which magnify her eyes to about ten times their normal size.
Trelawney will be played by Emma Thompson in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban(2004).
Trelawney has been at Hogwarts since 1979 (sixteen years) and since then has made two accurate peedictions. Both of them involve Lord Voldemort. The first prediction is:
- "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies..."
- "It will happen tonight. The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight... the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant’s aid, greater and more terrible than ever he was. Tonight... before midnight...the servant...will set out...to rejoin...his master...."
