Overlooking the River Tame, a castle existed on this site since Anglo-Saxon times, and served as residence of the Mercian kings. The present Tamworth castle dates from Norman times is one of the best preserved Norman Motte-and-Bailey Castles in Britain, and was first built after the Norman Invasion of Britain in the 11th century.
