The Price is Right (1956 version) was the first game show of this name to appear on television. With host Bill Cullen, contestants had the opportunity to bid on fabulous prizes, and match wits against one another to be closest to the price without going over.

The Price is Right ran from 1956 to 1965: from 1956 to 1963 on NBC, and from 1963 to 1965 on ABC. For two seasons (1959-1960 1960-1961) the show was eighth in the Nielson ratings, making it by far the most watched game show on television at the time.

The announcer for the show was Don Pardo on NBC and Johnny Gilbert on ABC.
