In late November New York City began a revised count, in which they distinguished the missing and dead as: death certificates issued by the medical examiner's office (ME), corresponding to recovered and identified bodies; death certificates issued through the courts (courts); and other reported missing (missing).

Timeline of Associated Press tally

The Associated Press assembled its tally from various sources, including those confirmed dead by a coroner or declared dead by a court; those reported dead by employers, airlines, or families, or who had memorial services; and those reported missing by employers or families.

Detailed timeline of identifications

August 19, 2002

Four names were removed from the list: one, a woman listed under her married and maiden name, and three people reported missing soon after the attacks by people who have since not been in contact with New York City officials.

August 20, 2002

Police determine that Albert John Vaughan, 45, and George V. Sims, 46, missing and presumed dead, are alive. Vaughan has been a patient at the Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, N.Y. Sims is a patient with amnesia and schizophrenia at a Mnahattan hospital.

August 27, 2002

The Newark Star-Ledger reports that George V. Sims is alive. By this point at least 7 people on the August 19 list have been found; there are now 2812 killed or presumed dead.
