History
The county was formed in 1861 from parts of Henderson County and Jackson County. Its name, like that of the Transylvania region of what is now Romania, is derived from the Latin words trans ("across") and silva or sylva ("woods").
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 986 km² (381 mi²). 980 km² (378 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.

The county is divided into eight townships: Boyd, Brevard, Catheys Creek, Dunns Rock, Eastatoe, Gloucester, Hogback, and Little River.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 29,334 people, 12,320 households, and 8,660 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (78/mi²). There are 15,553 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (41/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.67% White, 4.21% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,320 households out of which 25.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.74.
In the county the population is spread out with 20.40% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 23.10% from 25 to 44, 26.90% from 45 to 64, and 21.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 92.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $38,587, and the median income for a family is $45,579. Males have a median income of $31,743 versus $21,191 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,767. 9.50% of the population and 6.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.80% are under the age of 18 and 7.00% are 65 or older.
