Main Page | See live article | Alphabetical index The treeline refers to that place beyond which trees are unable to grow due to conditions of low temperature, short day length, and short growing season at extreme north and south (that is, high) latitudes. Similar effects limit the elevation above which trees can grow on a mountain side and where it is called the timberline, although sometimes treeline is used in this sense as well.
