Tsukino Usagi is the main character in the anime/manga Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. She is portrayed wearing a traditional Japanese school uniform. In the English dub, she is known as "Serena Tsukino". In the story, she is your average stereotype-breaker: An underachieving, slacker Japanese schoolgirl. Don't worry, though. For those still looking for a Japanese stereotype in this respect, you always have Mizuno Ami. Anyways, one day Usagi was running off to school (late again -- hey, at least she's showing up) and she sees some punk neighborhood kids abusing a cat. (There isn't crime in Japan, just animal cruelty) After rescuing the cat, who is actually Luna, an agent from a long-dead kingdom from the moon, the cat gives her a magical brooch that allows Usagi to transform into the soldier for love and justice, Sailor Moon!

Tsukino Usagi's name means literally "The Rabbit in the Moon" (Tsuki no Usagi). This is a pun based on the fact that while Europeans see a face on the surface of the Moon, the Japanese see a rabbit. Go figure, huh? The pun is obvious to Japanese who are told the story of "The Rabbit in the Moon" as children.

Usagi lives at home with her mother Ikuko Tsukino, her father Kenji Tsukino and her brother Shingo Tsukino. These characters were named after the real-life family of the Series' creator, Naoko Takeuchi.

Usagi's English dubbed name, "Serena" is a play on the word Selene, a moon goddess in Greek Mythology who fell in love with a shepherd called Endymion.
