In heraldry, in addition to the variations of the line that can be applied to both ordinaries and the field, there are some variations of ordinaries that can only be applied to them. An example is rompu, meaning that part of the ordinary is cut out and pushed up or to the side, with the cut-out piece just touching the rest of the ordinary. While in German heraldry, for example, rompu is relatively common, it is practically unknown in British heraldry.

Among the unique variations of ordinaries seen in the heraldry of the Society for Creative Anachronism is Rhiannon Mor MacFearghuis' "bend sinister of chain mail" (Ariane MacFhearguis show the same thing but with a pall)[1] and Marie du Bois' "bend of interlaced annulets" (both in the Barony of the Forgotten Sea).
