Woods Hole is a village within the town of Falmouth in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, at the extreme southwest corner of Cape Cod, near the island of Martha's Vineyard, and is the site of two famous scientific institutions: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Marine Biological Laboratory. It is also the site of a Coast Guard station and the terminus of a ferry route between the cape and Martha's Vineyard. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 925.

Geography

Woods Hole is located at 41°31'36" North, 70°39'47" West (41.526730, -70.663184)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²). 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 44.33% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 925 people, 459 households, and 212 families residing in the village. The population density is 165.3/km² (427.9/mi²). There are 942 housing units at an average density of 168.4/km² (435.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 94.70% White, 1.62% African American, 0.54% Native American, 1.84% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 459 households out of which 14.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.7% are married couples living together, 5.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 53.6% are non-families. 40.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.94 and the average family size is 2.58.

In the village the population is spread out with 13.5% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 27.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.
