Alhambra is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 85,804.

Alhambra High School, founded in 1898 is the largest in the district and home to well over 3,000 students any given year. Situated in the downtown area of Alhambra, it has easy access to the public libray and many eateries.

The school's mascot, the Moor, proudly comes out during football games. It's cheerleading and sports teams are regarded by some as the best in the state.

Geography

Alhambra is located about 5 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California at 34°4'55" North, 118°8'6" West (34.081859, -118.135052)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²), all of which is land.

History

Alhambra was founded in 1881. Recently, it has attracted many Chinese immigrants, and has developed an active Chinese business district. It is the home of record producer and murder suspect Phil Spector.

Demographics

As of the
census of 2000, there are 85,804 people, 29,111 households, and 20,668 families residing in the city. The population density is 4,347.7/km² (11,257.3/mi²). There are 30,069 housing units at an average density of 1,523.6/km² (3,945.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 30.02% White, 1.67% African American, 0.72% Native American, 47.22% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 16.25% from other races, and 4.01% from two or more races. 35.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 29,111 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 16.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.41.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $39,213, and the median income for a family is $43,245. Males have a median income of $33,847 versus $29,122 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,350. 14.3% of the population and 11.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.2% are under the age of 18 and 10.6% are 65 or older.
