Bay St. Louis is a city located in Hancock County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,209. It is the county seat of Hancock County6.

census of 2000, there are 8,209 people, 3,271 households, and 2,064 families residing in the city. The population density is 517.9/km² (1,342.1/mi²). There are 3,817 housing units at an average density of 240.8/km² (624.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 80.23% White, 16.59% African American, 0.40% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 1.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,271 households out of which 29.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.0% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% are non-families. 31.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.05. In the city the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older.
