The first mention of a market in Southwark is in 1276. It has received three Royal Charters. It is the oldest wholesale fruit and vegetable market in the United Kingdom still trading from its present site. It has been on its present site since 1756 and occupies 4.5 acres.

The market is administered by 21 trustees who have to live in the area.

Borough Market has become a fashionable place to buy food. It has been promoted by British television chefs and has been used as a film set.
